Tucci’s

Tucci’s is a Dublin Ohio staple; next to Harvest Pizza and right in the heart of historic Dublin.  It’s been around as long as I can remember and I recently learned that Tucci’s is part of the Matt the Millers family!  Although they have the same owners, the two restaurants are nothing alike.  Tucci’s is a mix between Coopers Hawk and Bravo.  They have quality food don’t get that wrong.  The seafood and steaks are a must.  They just aren’t as stuffy as a higher end place which is refreshing.  I came here with my husband and 5 close friends.  Two of those friends have worked in the food industry for years and knew our server.  We also got sat in the wine room, and had an entire room to ourselves, which made for a really fun time.  Our food and service were both great. But the bread? hmmm, let’s see!

  • Presentation – 1 Crumb

The freaking bread was waiting for us before we sat down! 🙂 The mere sight of breathed me smiling ear to ear.  Before we got there, I tried to look on Yelp and Open Table to see if Tucci’s had a bread service and couldn’t find anything. (What a shame) So I assumed they didn’t have one, but was pleasantly surprised.  The presentation was pretty standard, basket and bread towel with a separate plate of oil.  They get a full crumb because the bread was on the table before I sat down, still warm, and they put a lot of thought into the oil.

  • Bread Variety – .5 Crumbs

There was only one type of bread in the basket and that was sourdough.  Our table to seven ended up with two baskets and at first I thought we had two different types of bread, but they were the same.  One loaf looked darker than the other, that was all.  There was room in the basket for a second kind of bread so I’m a bit disappointed we only had one.  As we spoke with our server, the GM came in and one of my friends asked about a bread service that they used to have which came with whole loafs you had to cut yourself.  I did not ask how many pieces that bread service came with, however I am curious. Also jealous that I never experienced there original bread service. Ha!

  • Quality of Bread – .5 Crumb

The bread is sourdough, and you can’t go wrong with that.  It’s hard to mess up this bread, but possible!  The bread was moist on the inside, spongy and thickly sliced; Exactly how the inside of sourdough should be.  It was the outside that I was disappointed with.  Some people might not agree with me, but the signature tell of sourdough bread, besides the sour hint of flavor, is the hardness of the crust.  The crust is supposed to act as a utensil for eating the bread…what I mean is, the crust has to be hard enough that it can hold the bread in place when sliced.  The crust acting like a bread scoop…? Ok I’m rambling it seems.  Anyway, the crust on Tucci’s bread was not hard enough which on most other breads would be a plus, but I expect sourdough to have a hard crust, so that is why they only get half a crumb. I guess a soft sourdough just isn’t my thing.

  • Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – 1 Crumb

They had a well thought out side of oil and spices and actually served it with a spoon! Typically I see a plain dish of oil and no utensils, but Tucci’s thought this through.  Oil, check! balsamic vinegar, check! various mixture of yummy spices, check! 🙂 The spoon was clutch.  I was able to get a spoonful of all ingredients on my appetizer plate and was able o safely double dipped (shh)! The balsamic gave the oil flavor, but you still had the soggy bread bites because of the oil.  Simple yet enough!

  • Cost – 1 Crumb

Free bread alert! I mean you figured it has to be since it was on the table before we even sat down! Right?! Regardless, complimentary bread service is the best way to start a meal.  Being that the only real complaint I had was not enough bread variety (which should be considered a compliment in a way), they certainly get a full crumb for cost.

  • Overall Crumb Score – 4/5

Overall, Tucci’s soft sourdough bread was good, and their oil mixture was great.  All of that combined with being a complimentary service, I’m not surprised that scored 4 crumbs.  If their bread service isn’t enough to go to Tucci’s, keep in mind the seafood, steak and service are great too! Average entree is around $40, and drinks aren’t cheap either, but the free bread balances that out right?
