The Royce

Hello again! I recently went to The Royce for work, and realized that I never wrote a blog about their bread?! The first time I came here was June of 2021, and I’ve been back a couple times since.  Certainly a lot had been going on, but to miss a review of this cornbread was shocking!  Clearly I love the bread, and the rest of their food as I’ve been to The Royce a few times, ha! I also met the owner and learned more about the name of the restaurant.  I originally thought that Walter and Royce were brothers; turns out, Royce is Walter’s wife!!! I was surprised and amazed, and absolutely love it! He showed me a beautiful picture of her and I now have a face to the name.  I still can’t get over how cool it is to name a female Royce!!! Super cool!  Anyway, back to the bread and the food! In addition to the cornbread, I’ve also had their meat & cheese board, philly stuffed eggrolls, Royce burger and gem salad; all spectacular! Let’s get right into their Cornbread Drop Biscuits!

Presentation – 1 Crumb

Simple, yet graceful! The dish that the biscuits are served in is the perfect size.  The melted butter on top was perfection! There is nothing I would improve with this presentation.  The jelly is served on the side, which is great because if they had a bigger dish just for the jelly the presentation would be off.

Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

I wouldn’t expect there to be more than one type of bread when the menu says cornbread drop biscuits.  In fact, I would find it weird if there was another type of bread here.

Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb

Don’t let the name of this biscuit fool you! When i hear cornbread, I think dry and when I think biscuit I also think dry.  Well, this cornbread biscuit is anything but dry!!! It’s not a traditional cornbread, but an elevated one. Fluffy in the middle, melts in your mouth.  The butter on top soaks into the biscuit for a wonderful flavor. This doesn’t make a difference to my, but these are also gluten free!! Bread, gluten free, tasty!?! wha?!?!

Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – 1 Crumb

There is honey butter served on the top that is out of this world! The bread is served hot, and the butter is melted and covering all of the pieces. You could use a knife and spread the love around as well. In addition to the honey butter the biscuits are served with a side of pepper jelly (see below).  This was fire!! I know it doesn’t look like a lot of jelly, but it was enough for the entire basket of biscuits.  The flavor was great, not too hot but definately had a kick to it.

Cost – 1 Crumb

The Royce is higher end, and entrees run from $16-$37, a fair price for an appetizer would be between $9 and $15 based on the entree price.  The cornbread drop biscuits were only $7?! That’s a steal if you ask me! There were 5 or 6 biscuits which is plenty for the table, and if you need more just order two.  At that price, why not. The rest of their starters are between $10 and $16, minus the deviled eggs which are also $7.  SO, if you’re going to The Royce, you have to get their biscuits! Ok, you don’t have to but I highly recommend it.

Overall Crumb Score – 5/5

It’s been a while since I’ve given out a perfect crumb score! The Royce’s Cornbread Drop Biscuits earned it.  From the honey butter, to the fluffy center of the bread not to mention the price; don’t walk, run to The Royce!  Did I mention they have brunch every single day?!? YUM!
