Subourbon Southern Kitchen and Spirits

Subourbon Southern Kitchen and Spirits is in a great location, right on Linworth Rd in Worthington, Ohio. It’s a wonder why this particular restaurant has had a tun of turnover. Back in the day, it was a Hoggy’s then it was another BBQ place, then someone tried to make it high end organic place and now it’s Subourbon Southern Kitchen and Spirits. Yes, they’re trying to be a bit more upscale than they actually are, but their food was on point! Obviously they serve southern cusiune but it’s all fresh and locally sourced. I believe this restaurant will be around for a long time to come.  Their drinks are fabulous as well. I’m not a big bourbon drinker, but if you are you have to come here. They have quite the variety!  Anywho, I went here with my husband and daughter on a Friday night and got in without a wait, thank goodness. We sat in their enclosed patio which we thought would be cold, but it was pleasant.  There were two, I repeat, two bread apps on the menu but I only got one.  So I’ll have to return to try their cast iron cornbread.  Instead we opted for their good old “bread & butter”.

Presentation – 1 Crumb

Oh, if only I could aware 2 crumbs! Can I?!…nah! Just look at their plating? Stunning! Both types of bread are seperated so there is no confusion, the pickled onions are on both sides of the plate for balance, and their seasonal butter is plopped right in the middle in it’s own dish. Simply put. Perfection!

Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

I only expected one type of bread since this dish was just called bread and butter. After reading the description on their menu I quickly learned that this comes with both sourdough and rye! YUM! Two varieties are certainly better than one. Full crumb here.

Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb

In their menu, this bread is called Sixteen Bricks bread, which is an artisan bakery out of Cincinnati Ohio.  The bread is grilled, and had wonderful grill marks and yes it was still warm.  The slices were a bit thin but that’s good with sourdough and rye because they’re so dense.  Both types of bread were good, but the sourdough was my favorite. It was just a little bit more flavorful.

Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – 1 Crumb

Probably the best spreads/accompaniments of any bread I’ve had thus far! This came with ample amounts of pickled onions. The star though was the whipped butter! Just look at it, so creamy with jalapenos pepper and honey. This was their seasonal butter at the time, which I would imagine gets swapped out as the seasons change. Incredible!

Cost – .5 Crumbs

I think I mentioned at the start of this, that Subourban Southern Kitchen is trying to be a little more upscale than they actually are. Well their prices reflect that. Their appetizers range from $8 to $14, and their entrees range from $22 to $33.  Their bread and butter is at the low end of $8.  I think all of their prices are a bit inflated, but I do think you get a lot for this dish which is why I’m only taking half a point off.

Overall – 4.5/5 Crumbs

All in all, their bread and butter is a must if you eat here.  The presentation, variety and butter make this one of the better bread services I’ve had recently. The butter is to die for!!!! Yes, they’re a bit too pricey, so if nothing else come in for a drink (or two) and the bread and butter. I shall return to try their cast iron cornbread, ha!
