Hudson 29

First of all, Happy 2023!! I can’t even believe the year! In my mind, it’s still 2010 or 2011!?! I don’t know, everything is a blur, but there’s no way it’s already 2023!?! Right? Anyway, about this bread. I entice you in with an image of bread then start rambling…typical!

Let me start by saying that I’ve been to Hudson 29 probably close to 15 times and this last time I went was the first time I even noticed bread on their menu?! Who am I!? I was so disappointing in myself for that, ha! Anyway, I went to Hudson 29 for lunch with a couple co-workers and a couple of clients.  I almost ordered the charcuterie, when someone pointed out to me that they have bread on the menu, and I’m so glad about that!

Presentation – 1 Crumb

The presentation was simple, but the bread itself makes a statement.  Simple white plate, one napkin and 3 huge puffy pieces of bread. Served with marinara sauce. The rolls are huge, so I can’t see them being served any other way.

Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

On the menu it says “Cheese stuffed House Baked Butter Rolls”, and that is what I got. If another variety of bread was served with this, I would have been confused, ha!

Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb

Oh, the quality! The roll was dense and heavy yet airy. The bottom of it truly tasted like a homemade butter roll, but the top and middle with all of the cheese, combined with the marinara sauce tasted like a pizza.  There was a ton of cheese, but not too much; enough to have cheese in almost every bite. Once you get to the bottom, the cheese is all gone. Maybe I ate them the wrong way, I’m not sure. We asked the server if the rolls were homemade and she proceeded to tell us that they get these rolls from Dan the Baker.  This guy is located at 1028 Ridge St and has been in the Columbus market for years! Commercially he sells his bread to Hudson 29 (both locations) as well as Guild House, which is another Cameron Michell restaurant. Beyond that, he sells bread at his location and apparently there is a line every morning! I totally understand why, it’s absolutely delicious!

Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – .5 Crumb

As mentioned earlier, these rolls came with marinara sauce.  I may be a bit harsh here, but for how fresh and unique the bread it you would think the marinara sauce would be homemade at least. It tasted like store bought so that’s why I’m docking half a crumb.  That said, it certainly doesn’t take away from the amazing bread at all.

Cost – 1 Crumb

Hudson 29 is a Cameron Mitchell restaurant and with that comes higher pricing.  Their cheese stuffed house baked butter rolls are $12. Normally I would say that’s pretty damn high for bread but these rolls are so filling, like I said, they’re practically pizza. So this price is reasonable.  The rest of their appetizers are between $15 and $19, so this is the cheapest and in my opinion, tastiest app there is.

Overall – 4.5/5 Crumbs

Outside of the marinara sauce, they would have had a perfect score.  Please don’t overlook this on their menu as it’s one of the top items they have! If you haven’t been to Hudson 29, you’re missing out! They have superb food including sushi, sandwiches, salads and of course their Cheese stuffed House Baked Butter Rolls courtesy of Dan the Baker!  They have 2 locations, but I always go to their Upper Arlington location.
