Hoggy’s

I live right up the road from Hoggy’s, and it has been at the bottom of Bethel Road for as long as I can remember.  What I couldn’t remember was the last time I ate there!  As my boss and I were heading back to the station from a meeting he inquired about lunch.  I had a salad at the office but caved and decided to eat out with him.  I suggested Panera, and he was like what is this Hoggy’s.  I can never pass up a BBQ place, so to Hoggy’s we went.  You can smell the BBQ before the doors even open, and man is it a mouthwatering smell.  You can either order a la carte, or choose from a variety of other menu options.  The best deal is going for the platter which range in price from $9.95 to $13.95.  You pick either sandwich, salad or naked style.  Meat choices are pulled pork sliced brisket, pulled chicken, sliced turkey and 3 bone ribs. That comes with 1 side.  My boss ordered the ribs and I had a pulled chicken sandwich.  We both got the broccoli salad as our side.  The most important part though was the corn muffin that came with it.

3 Bone Ribs Platter
  • Presentation – .5 Crumb

The presentation simply has to fit with the atmosphere, and this corn muffin was right at home.  As you can see, everything was strategically plated on the plate including the corn muffin.  The butter in its own container right next to it. Everything placed neatly and ready to devour. Just looking at the muffin you know a lot of care was taken from the baking to it to the plating. However, the muffin was just placed on the plate, nothing too special.  Also, the butter was served in a to-go container even though I ate there.  More effort could have been put into that, which is why they’re at a fair half of a crumb.

  • Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

As mentioned above, it’s all about fitting with the atmosphere, or theme of the place.  Hoggy’s is a barbecue joint. The only bread I can think of (besides sandwich buns) for a BBQ place is cornbread, or in this case a corn muffin.  So, I think only having cornbread is just enough.  The food was filling by itself so having two or more types of bread would be overkill.

  • Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb

Homemade alert! This corn muffin was full of flavor and very juicy for cornbread.  Done poorly, cornbread can be extremely dry and crumbly.  That was not the case at Hoggy’s.  Their cornbread…I mean muffin, was juicy, dense and baked to perfection.  The muffin felt like more of a dessert to me as I ate it at the end of my meal.  I stopped eating my sandwich bun (potato roll)  to save room for it.  The corn muffin was very sweet yet hardy… very good.

  • Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – .5 Crumbs

There was only one spread for the muffin, and that was plain whipped butter.  Nothing too special about it besides the texture. This certainly beats normal butter but with no added flavor to the butter or an additional spread, this only gets half of a crumb.. The texture was nice though, and the muffin itself was so good so adding butter took it to another level.

  • Cost – 1 Crumb

These muffins either come with a platter or can be purchased individually for $1.95 each.  Although these muffins look small they’re dense and filling.  They’re definately worth the two dollars. I’m not sure what they consider to be a “bulk” order, but you can even buy these delicacies in bulk for $.75 each.

  • Overall Crumb Score – 4/5

The platters come with one side and your choice of either two toppings (for your sandwich, salad, etc) or you can swap out for a corn muffin.  Why on earth would you not swap for a corn muffin? These fresh, homemade creations are a must! Overall, for a fast casual BBQ restaurant I’m highly satisfied with their bread service/dessert/side/I’mComingBackSoonForMore!!!  If you want a “real” dessert, they also offer homemade banana pudding and fresh cookies.  In addition to the platters they offer a variety of wings, a Mac n cheese pulled pork sandwich, a turkey bacon club, a smokehouse salad and a supersized platter names Hoggy’s Grazer which comes with 3 types of meat, 3 sides and of course the corn muffin.
