Forbidden Root

I’ve got a lot of bread posts catch up on here, believe me when I tell you I’ve eaten so much bread and I need to get to writing! I went to Forbidden Root in February (it’s almost April as I’m writing this), for my cousins birthday. No, we did not stop there, but we went to Forty Deuce afterwards.  If you’re local and haven’t been I highly suggest it! It’s a “hidden” burlesque show and is fabulous!  Anyway, back to Forbidden Root…This place is at Easton of course and has been here for a couple of years I believe. It certainly wasn’t my first time eating there, but it was my first time eating their Jalapeno Cheese Bread!

Presentation – 0 Crumbs

You can see it can’t you?! Three strips of greasy bread slapped onto a plate.  Absolutely nothing to this at all, not even the typical piece of paper they stick in the basket at Bob Evans for their rolls. Nothing at all, which is why they get zero crumbs for presentation.  The least they could have done was wipe the grease off the plate.

Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

Their jalapeno cheese bread sounds like it comes with just one type of bread, and it did. I would be a bit confused if they had multiple types of jalapeno corn bread. It would require an “s” in the description, or an additional explaination so they get a full crumb here.

Quality of Bread – 1 Cumb

Here’s what blew me away…the bread looks and feels gross, let’s just face it. Long, thin, greasy a bit crispy on the outside. Once you take a bite it blows your mind! It’s like a cross between garlic bread, corn bread and brioche.  So spongy, and flavorful! You would think that since the word jalapeno is in the name it would be spicy but it’s not at all. Yes, you taste the jalapeno but it’s not burning your tongue or anything. The texture is amazing and I highly recommend coming to Forbidden Root for this jalapeno cheese bread and their beer selection.

Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – .5 Crumbs

I’m so torn here…on one hand the jalapeno cheese bread didn’t really need anything else. It was greasy yet spongy and tasted wonderful. On the other hand, bread should never be served without some sort of spread, even if that’s melted cheese on top, etc. So they’re getting half of a crumb.  The word cheese is in the name for this bread, but I couldn’t taste any, so maybe melted cheese on the top? Or an additional helping of jalapenos if you were expecting something spicy. Plain old butter is also a good go to as well.

Cost – 1 Cumb

Forbidden Root is very reasonable, they have entrees raning from $16 to $26, and their appetizers range from $4-$10.  Their Jalapeno Cheese Bread comes in at just $6; so $2 per piece.  I think this is a good deal for how much bread you get.  I got this just for myself and there’s no way I could finish it, so I shared with the 3 other people I was with.  It’s a great portion for the price, although if my plan was to split with the table I would have gotten two servings, ha!

Overall – 3.5/5 Crumbs

Even though they only came in at a 3.5, I highly recommend going to Forbidden Root and ordering their Jalapeno Cheese Bread! The flavor totally outweighs the presentation, grease and the fact that there are no speads/accompaniments!
