Bobby-Q

Before I get into Bobby-Q’s cornbread, I have an update! I’m currently 17 weeks pregnant, thrilled, happy and hungry! My husband and I haven’t traveled together in over two years due to the pandemic and me being immunocompromised, but we took the plunge and went to Arizona for a few days. It was much needed, and a wonderful time indeed. In fact, I’m currently writing this post from the airplane on our way back to Columbus. I was so excited to have a post to write that I couldn’t wait!

so let me get right to it, Bobby-Q’s! I’m a Yelp advocate and saw that this place served cornbread in some capacity, which of course made me want to eat there. After scouring the menu, we did not find any bread at all, so of course we asked. Turns out they serve it free before your meal. Ideal!!! This place was hoping on a Saturday night and I was thankful we made reservations. The atmosphere was very nice, they have large tables for groups, the bar looked inviting. (Although all bars do when you can’t drink, ha) The food portions were huge, naturally I ate all of my pulled pork sandwich and baked potato! But how about the cornbread…?

Presentation – .5

Maybe I’m getting too picky, but the cornbread could have been presented a hair better. Basket, piece of paper and two cornbreads on top with the butter in a clear plastic container just doesn’t cut it anymore. Especially at the type of place Bobby-Q’s is. Yes, it’s a BBQ joint, but their cocktails and food seem higher end so their bread should be presented that way as well. If you’re going to charge $20 a plate, fancy up the bread.

Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

Its cornbread…I would expect there to only be one type of cornbread served, which is what these guys did. 🙂

Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb

The quality though! Oh man! The worst thing I can think of when I think of cornbread is dry. This was a far cry from dry! It was almost gooey, crispy outside crust, warm center, a few crumbs spilled out on my plate, but I wouldn’t call this cornbread crumbly at all. Superb, and I would give them two crumbs here if I could. Not to mention these were rather large portions. The cornbread was also very thick, which most likely aided in the fact that these were so moist.

Quality and Quantity of Spread – 0 Crumbs

Again, maybe I’m becoming more picky now that I’m pregnant, ha! The quality of the spread should match the atmosphere of the establishment and plain, cold butter served in a clear plastic container is not what I would expect. The butter spread well on the cornbread, but if it was any colder there would have been issues. Even whipped butter would have been better served the same way. That would have warranted half a crumb at least.

Cost – 1 Crumb

This was an easy one, a perfect score for an unexpectedly free cornbread! This higher end BBQ place ranges in price from $14-$19 appetizers and $16-$40 entrees, so to get a free piece of bread it is quite generous and again unexpected.

Overall Crumb Score – 3.5/5

Don’t let the overall score deter you from enjoying this wonderful cornbread! Points for presentation and spread certainly shouldn’t take away from the fact that this cornbread is outstanding, thick, juicy, fluffy and tasty! If you’re in Mesa Arizona and find yourself looking for some BBQ, please stop by Bobby-Q’s. My husband and I would go back in a second!
