Lindey’s

Being in sales, I end up going out to eat a lot! Most restaurants don’t have a bread service at lunch, so you can imagine how happy I was that Lindey’s had bread service! Even more excited to find two kinds of bread in the basket.

Lindey’s is a higher end restaurant who has a ” surf n turf” menu. Their food is good, but not great! For lunch, their entrees range from $13 – $19, which isn’t too bad! Their prices are similar to Hudson 29.  Lindey’s is a great place to go in the warmer months as they have a kick ass patio. I usually don’t go to Lindey’s in the winter, but it was the clients choice.  Anyway, back to the bread!

  • Presentation – 0 Crumbs

Although I was excited about the bread, the presentation was disappointing.  The sourdough bread wasn’t cut very well, and the butter looked very sad on that plate.  The butter slices are thrown on the plate any old which way! Not good.

  • Bread Variety – 1 Crumb

Here’s the thing, any bread service at lunch is a treat! Add in two kinds of bread, it’s extra special.  They could have stopped with the sourdough, really! Instead, they included house-made flaxseed lavash which was by far the star of bread service.  The sourdough was good though, typical sourdough; soft and spongy in the middle, and hard as a rock on the outside.  The bread itself was room temperature and would have better warm. I may have been able to actually melt the butter and enjoy it.

Hidden in that basket was the lavash! The best way to describe the lavash is a triangular crisp that has a hind of cheese flavor.  Although it’s very crunchy, it’s flaky and light, almost falls apart in your mouth.  They have cheese, flaxseed and other herbs on the top of each piece and it tastes great. So happy to see two very different kinds of bread so well balanced in the same basket.

  • Quality of Bread – .5 Crumbs

So I’m torn here…the flaxseed lavash is homemade, and very tasty! The mix of herbs and cheese on the top give it a “made by mom” taste that melts in your mouth.  On the other hand, the sourdough bread wasn’t anything special.  Although it was “anatomically correct” for a sourdough! There was just nothing special about it, and I don’t believe they make their sourdough in house.

  • Quality & Quantity of Spread(s) – 0 Crumbs

jSo this is where I get mean…  They gave me two big pieces of plain butter.  They literally just sliced two pieces off and put it on a small plate. First, the sourdough wasn’t even warm which makes it hard to spread butter, but then the butter was cold. So I ended up with one big glob of butter on the bread.  If I was by myself I would have just mushed the butter into the middle of the bread.  Of course I was with clients so I couldn’t.  I ended up only eating a small portion of the sourdough because I wasn’t able to spread the butter, which was very sad,  The lavash didn’t need any, it was fine on it’s own. Mmmm! If they even presented the plain butter in a better way, they may have gotten half a crumb…maybe! Unfortunately they couldn’t even pull that off.

  • Cost – 1 Crumb

I certainly can’t complain about a free bread service with two varieties of bread.  I would think that a place like Lindey’s would have bread available for purchase.  In fact once I knew where we were going, I looked up their menu to see if they had bread listed! Secretly (not so secretly) I look on every menu to check for bread service before I go. Ha! I don’t want to be let down if they don’t have bread service. So if I don’t see bread listed on the menu, I just assume I won’t be eating bread.  If they do have a complimentary bread service, obviously I’m ecstatic.

  • Overall – 2.5/5 Crumbs

Lindey’s is a great place to go in the summer to get some food and drink a cocktail.  Although the flaxseed lavash was excellent, nothing else about the bread service was. If I were to rate each type of bread, I would give the lavash an easy 5/5! As for the sourdough, I would give it a 2/5, so this overall 2.5 crumbs score is just right.  No one thinks of bread service when they think of Lindey’s and I don’t see that changing any time soon.  They do seafood well, and the lobster bisque is a must.  In fact, I should have dipped some of the sourdough in the lobster bisque!

It’s kind of sad to think what Lindey’s crumb score would have been if they only served the … It stands on it’s own, and crumbs wouldn’t have slipped away with the butter which cost them in both the spreads and presentation categories.
