Sow Plated is a hidden gem! This place is located in the Shops on Lane Ave., and is tucked in between some great shopping and mediocre restaurants. This is a fairly new restaurant that doesn’t advertise at all, but is constantly busy. You walk in to the restaurant and you feel like you’re walking onto an Instagram page. Everything is picture perfect, light and airy. They have a few individual tables, but mostly they have communal seating, which I don’t mind. Most if not all of their food is homemade, vegetarian and/or vegan. I could go on and on about their food and drinks, excellent service but we’re here for the bread! 🙂
- Presentation – 1 Crumb
I mean, did you see the picture?!? They took their time plating this one! Ignore the extra dish, we ordered the cheese on the side. I’m not sure if the cheese is normally plopped on the plate like the rest of the spreads, of if it’s served on top of the bread. Either way, they garnished the cheese with cashews, and the garnished the hummus with toasted sesame seeds. The bread is strategically placed, leaving room for the spreads. This certainly deserves a full crumb for presentation.
- Bread Variety – 1 Crumb
We have two varieties of bread here; pita and french baguette. Simple, yet plenty. The bread was served hot, and my suggestion would be to dive into the pita bread first. Once it gets cold, the bread does get a bit hard. Still edible and tasty, but one of those where on the first bite, you don’t know if your teeth will do their job or not. Ha! If eaten hot, the pita melts in your mouth and tastes great with all of the spreads. The french baguette is what it is; french baguette is french baguette in most cases. I love this type of bread especially served hot like this was. The cheese was outstanding on the baguette…wait no, all of the spreads were.
- Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb
Once again, I spoke too much about the bread quality in the bread variety section. Silly me! Sow Plated is s self proclaimed “made-from-scratch health inspired restaurant”, and most if not all of the things on their menu are homemade. The pita bread was dense but not hard (until it got cold), and I can say the same about the french baguette. They were both fluffy on the inside, easy to pull apart and beyond that tasty on their own. The baguette was exactly how it should be; a hard outer shell, and a soft middle.
- Quantity & Quality of Spread(s) – 1 Crumb
I’ve been waiting to get here because I’m so excited to tell you about these spreads! Starting with the kale guacamole. First this is homemade, second you can’t even tell there’s kale in it and third it was freaking so creamy and delicious. There were a few chunky bits of avocado, onion and a tiny bit of tomato, otherwise smooth and refreshing. I love how with guacamole you can instantly tell if it’s homemade or not. No sneaking on this one! Next, the hummus, and I’m a SUCKER for hummus. There wasn’t anything particularly special about it, it was just humus with toasted sesame seeds on it, and it was very tasty. I kept putting gobs of it on my bread because there was so much of it. It looked like I was scooping a tiny bit, but then it covered my entire piece of bread, ha! So was it too much hummus or just a small piece of bread?? hmm? Last was the homemade cashew pimento cheese. OH MAN! It was so good! It’s vegan and gluten free and not really cheese. They garnished it with cashews for an extra touch which I appreciated. The first taste of the “cheese” actually tastes like cashew butter, and has the consistency of like not so sticky peanut butter? Then the after taste hits and it magically tastes like cheese. Not an overbearing cheddar, more like a soft, clean, buttery flavor. All 3 of these spreads were homemade, unique in their own way and delicious. This earns them a very deserving crumb.
- Cost – 1 Crumb
First, I want to say that the average price of their menu ranges from $15-$26. So not super expensive, but not cheap by any means. They have 6 starters to choose from, and the Breads & Spreads is their most expensive at $14. We had also ordered their Bok Choy appetizer which was outstanding, and that was only $9. That said, I would order their bread service all day long! Even though this bread service is on the pricier end they still deserve a full crumb due to the quality of the dish as a whole. I will certainly be back to enjoy this bread service again.
- Overall Crumb Score – 5/5
Sow Plated is a great place to go if you’re not expecting meat. They’re a healthy, homemade, organic, vegetarian restaurant near Ohio State’s campus, tucked between some great shops and some so-so restaurants. SOW stands for: Sustainable, Organic, Wellness, and they deliver on that. The Shops at Lane Ave hold a treasure called Sow Plated, and everyone should experience it. Their bread service is tasty, and the rest of their menu is too. Did I mention they have a half priced happy hour where you get select appetizer and drinks half off?!? It’s Mon-Fri 3-6 Pm and Saturday 12-4 pm.
